Grillz were originally derived from the Etruscans (Ancient Italians) in 800 BC. Gold wiring around their teeth was believed to be used as a sign of status and wealth. The dominance of Ceasar and the Romans ceased their culture including grillz by 100 AD. Similar conquests happened to the Mayans and pre-colonial Filipinos from 900-1300 AD. Grillz first emerged in the United States in the late 1970s. Gold was one of the cheapest ways to fill cavities for teeth. During this time, impoverished West Indian and African Americans living in different boroughs of NY began wearing them. Eventually, they started wearing gold teeth as a fashion statement. It became even more popular with the birth of hip-hop. Now today grillz are apart of pop culture
